WILTON, New York — The community is mourning the loss of Gary “Chip” H. Houle, who passed away on July 3, 2026, at the age of 72, following a courageous battle with cancer. Chip’s final moments were spent at home, surrounded by his loving family.

A Life of Dedication and Work

Born on May 20, 1954, in Cohoes, N.Y., Chip was the son of Francis J. Houle and Agnes Connors Houle. After graduating from Cohoes High School, he completed the Watervliet Arsenal machinist apprentice program, beginning a 28-year career as a machinist at the Arsenal.

Following retirement from government service, Chip embarked on a second career in the Price Chopper/Market32 meat and deli departments, where customers fondly knew him as “The Cheese Man.” His warmth and generosity made him a familiar and beloved figure. Even after retiring again, he continued working part-time at a local liquor store, reflecting his love for engaging with people.

Family and Personal Life

Chip met Pamela Lyman in January 1975, and they married eight months later. Together, they raised three children in Wilton, where they lived happily for over five decades.

He was a devoted Mets and Ravens fan, known for his wealth of sports knowledge. Beyond sports, he enjoyed vegetable gardening, family dinners, casino trips, and cherished vacations to Cape Cod.

Survived By

Chip is survived by his wife of 51 years, Pam; children Jason Houle of Gansevoort, Daniel Houle of Atlanta, and Lea Houle of Queensbury; siblings Karen Grose, David, and Mark Houle; grandchildren Luke and Avery Manning, Adelynne Houle, and Ayden Eberhard; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. He was predeceased by his parents and brothers Frank (Tyke) and John (Jack) Houle.

Funeral Arrangements

Relatives and friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m., Sunday, July 12, at William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes, 628 North Broadway, Saratoga Springs, N.Y. A Celebration of Life will follow on Sunday, July 26, from 2 to 5 p.m., at 27 Putnam Rd., Gansevoort, N.Y.

The Houle family extends heartfelt gratitude to Saratoga Palliative Care and Community Hospice staff, as well as neighbors and friends, for their compassionate assistance during this difficult time.
