CHESTERFIELD, Virginia — The Chesterfield and Henrico County communities are mourning the heartbreaking loss of Skylar Mackenzie Vargo, 23, of South Chesterfield, who tragically died following a wrong-way crash on Interstate 295 in Henrico County. Details of the Crash
According to the Virginia State Police, troopers responded at approximately 2:27 a.m. Thursday to a serious crash near the Route 60 and Interstate 64 east exit at the 28-mile marker on I-295.
A preliminary investigation determined that a Hyundai, driven by Skylar, was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes when it collided head-on with a tractor-trailer. The impact forced the tractor-trailer across the median into the southbound lanes before coming to rest. The Hyundai caught fire, and despite the rapid response of emergency personnel, Skylar was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured. Hazardous materials crews responded after the truck began leaking diesel fuel and oil, leading to temporary closures on the interstate while investigators documented evidence and cleared the scene.
